"At one point I told him, 'Just stop it,' " said state Senate President Richard J. Codey, a Democrat who preceded Corzine as governor and remains popular. "I said to him, 'It's very hard to get up on a stage before 1,000 people, do a PowerPoint presentation on how their tolls should go up 800 percent, and be persuasive.' "
The toll-road debacle helps explain why Corzine is running barely even in his race for reelection, despite an extraordinary array of advantages: The Democrat entered the race with a vast personal fortune, a 4 to 3 advantage in voter registration and the powers of incumbency.
For observers of the race -- Corzine is the only governor up for reelection one year into the Great Recession -- the question is how much of his plight flows from himself, and how much from the revenue shortfalls devastating budgets in nearly every state.
"They want to blame somebody," said Kendra Gray, 37, taking a break from shopping in the vast and mostly empty Jersey Gardens outlet mall in Elizabeth.
In New Jersey, the question is complicated by Corzine's uneasy fit with the state's political culture, which is both grittier and more inclined to backslapping than is the professorial former head of investment giant Goldman Sachs.
"It's a Jersey thing," Cheryl Carual, 29, said when asked why the governor has spent most of the campaign trailing Republican Chris Christie.
Corzine? Another Wall Street Fat Cat being pushed by Obama and the limousine liberals.
Corzine tries quick, corrupt investment banker style fixes like selling all of NJ’s toll roads to the highest bidder. Well, all I can say is Goldman’s commissions on that deal probably would pale in comparison to the $$$billions Goldman will make off us energy consumers on its CO2/ Carbon exchange Goldman already owns along with Obama’s cronies when Obama passes Cap and Tax. How come Corzine and all the other liberals’ grand schemes cost us mega big time yet keep lining the pockets of their already rich contributors and supporters? Like all the Big Health Insurance companies that will gain millions of forced subscribers and $$$$$ when Obamacare passes? Can anybody say “democrat fund raisers?”
This supposed financial genius can't even balance the State budget, keeps spending like mad, and expects to be reelected because he can spend $$$millions on TV/radio ads?
Spendthrift power hungry thieves like Corzine, Obama, Pelosi and their ilk need to go tomorrow if not sooner.
Madison---the Corzine deficit projection for next year is $8B----NJ pays the highest property taxes per capita in the entire nation---NJ has the nation's highest total tax burden---and unemployment is at it's highest rate in 33 years......NJ is also ranked dead LAST by The Tax Federation in terms of business tax climate----it's no wonder the state is bleeding jobs and families as they are forced from the Garden State. And dem corruption? Don't even get me started......CORZINE is a classic TAX AND SPEND LIBERAL WHO MUST GO!!!

Unfortunately, some of the folks think that everything will be fine since he's said "I'm sorry". What fools.....Based upon the article, he seems to be all about himself, blames everything on the recession and came up with the brilliant "Asset Monetization" program. This guy deserves to go but I really doubt he will.
F Pfarr---it's REALLY REALLY REALLY hard for a republican to win in New Jersey----but I will not lose hope. It's going to be a photo finish to be sure. If Corzine wins I will have lost all faith in my fellow man. It's that bad.
F Pfarr---I also thought Corzine's attacks on Christie's driving record of all things was beyond the pale---after the Governor himself was nearly killed in a crash (not wearing his seatbelt---such a role model) on the Garden State Parkway---as his driver sped along over 90 miles an hour to rush Corzine to a meeting at the Governor's mansion with the Rutgers Girls Basketball team post the big Don Imus scandal......when the thrust of your attacks on your opponent are his driving record and his weight I'd say indeed Corzine is in trouble and running scared from his own failed record in New Jersey---had it not been for indie candidate Chris Daggett Christie would have had a cake walk come next Tuesday.
Lisa-since I will be away on business next week, I'm going to fill out my absentee ballot today and mail it with a vote for Christie. Hopefully Daggett won't draw to many votes away
Good point about Jon boys little 90mph joy ride, funny how the media gave him a pass on that...imagine my surprise!
Andy----thank you for getting in your vote for Chris Christie!!! We must ALL do our part to kick out Corzine come November 3rd. I'm hopeful that polls are overstating Daggett......
Andy-Not only did the media give Corzine a pass on the accident, they hammered Sanford when his driver was going 18 mph over, without being in a life threatening accident. Typical hypocrisies.
I still have hope for Christie because I think before people vote, they will realize that Corzine has spent tens of millions of his own money for this campaign. This will stick in the back of the minds of many realizing that Corzine really is all about himself and doesn't care about the people of New Jersey. Good seed lisa.
Mike in Az---thanks for stopping by.....what's disheartening as a republican in this big blue state is trying to fight the Corzine spending and the democratic machine......very very entrenched very very corrupt.
For me, Corzine represents the essence of party politics in NJ, particularly Democratic machine politics. He is also indicative of Democratic hypocrisy, so his attacks on Christie probably didn’t even register with the hacks he hired to run his campaign.
The thought of Corzine as a financial wizard is also very interesting; at the time he was head of Goldman Sachs, he didn’t necessarily need financial expertise and skills to be successful, the risk taking and other “practices” that eventually lead to our economic meltdown guaranteed quick returns, easy money and personal gain. What worked more than talent and ability were the scams and manipulation of the public’s money.
Did Corzine really think that he could use the same gimmicks and sleight of hand to return a “sinking” state to prosperity? The games may have worked so wonderfully at Goldman Sachs but that doen't mean they apply to government; a shell game is still a shell game no matter what term you want to dress it up with. Even Corzine Goldman Sachs cronies couldn’t put Humpty together again; really says something about the Goldman Sachs “brain trust” doesn’t it?
And business development, what a disaster in NJ under Corzine’s watch; it’s obvious he either doesn't care about business or he and his economic development czars have no clues what to do. Business is fleeing the state almost as fast as Jersey residents; they are overburdened, over taxed and over their heads in fees; it’s a wonder there is no job creation under Corzine; at present, the only thing Corzine stimulated was a growth in the public sector.
Although it appears that Corzine is a bit of a whore across the political landscape, jumping in bed with unions, special interests and democratic party bosses (whether indicted or not); he can also be looked at as a pimp, using his money to buy influence and favors, including those from the same bosses he jumps in bed with.
Although out registered five to one, Republicans can still win in NJ, particularly in a climate of high taxes and high cost of living. Unfortunately, the election was Christie’s to lose, and he seems to be doing all that he can to succeed at that. I would have preferred better than Christie, but you have to play the hand that is dealt; there's enough strength in the hand to oust Corzine.
And Daggett, he worked for the NJ DEP and we know how bureaucratic those folks are and what they’ve contributed to progress in NJ. Daggett is more akin to Corzine, I just trust the public recognizes this and doesn't take votes from Christie.
Andromeda---excellent as usual---wish you could expand and submit as editorial to Newark Star Ledger---you are dead on about Corzine. It amazes me that the whole Goldman Sachs thing hasn't hurt Corzine's re-election bid more than it apparently has thus far particularly with the emergence of Daggett. As I believe I read in one of the Wall Street Journal pieces on this election---if Corzine wasn't funding Daggett he should be. Daggett was the only one of 10 independent candidates who was able to muster up the $340,000 in donations needed to be eligible for matching funds.....wonder how he managed that one? Oh, and on a radio show this morning Daggett refused to rule out taking a job in the Corzine administration.....wonder why? I saw Chris Christie at a brunch featuring Dick Morris recently---he was very impressive. I agree his campaign could have been managed much more effectively.....it's kinda like watching the McCain campaign at times.....
lisaed, thank you and it's always a pleasure to comment on your seeds; they are of great interest and they always happen to be thought provoking. I appreciate your comment about the Star Ledger, but they too are in bed with Corzine (the why eludes me), whether they want to openly admit it or not; thank you though.
Guess Daggett collected his share of fees at the DEP? Very good point about Corzine funding Daggett, it would bolster his position.
Andromeda---yes, for those who didn't already know Star Ledger was in bed with Corzine---they found out when the paper endorsed (cough cough) Daggett.....how stupid do they think we are in NJ? Wait. Don't answer that.
Wonderfully put, lisaed.
Not even a year into the "Democrat Revolution" and things are going horribly wrong for them. These elections will obviously be influenced heavily by local matters, but there will definitely be influences from the national sphere where Obama has over-promised and under-delivered. It's the first chance for the public to air their views on "change" (aka higher taxes).
Dr. Danny----voters will be sending a message to Obama today to be sure.
lisaed,
What a close race! Corzine should be walking away with it; but, NJ has awakened. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Christie.
Dr. Danny, how very nice to see you. You've been missed.
Best, Ellie
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Christie.
Ellie---thank you!
Thanks Ellie, I lost faith with Newsvine a bit, trying to give it a go again now. I certainly missed the people like yourself, Lisa, Bill, Waynester, Backroads and many others that made this a good place. Let's hope New Jersey decides for "change" back to common sense.
Dr. Danny---it's good to have you back....a break sometimes is good for anyone.....and yes today in NJ there is only ONE CHOICE to change Trenton and help keep families/jobs in NJ---and that is Chris Christie! GO CHRISTIE----BEAT CORZINE!!!
Congrats, lisaed!! What a win!
Ellie---THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.......I was there to witness Chris give his victory speech last night---it was a thrill that I will never forget:

Lisa- what a great night, so glad you were there to experience the victory, I watched it on TV from Vegas...hopefully we can get our state back.
hopefully we can get our state back.
Andy---yes, Tuesday night was an important first step. I have unemployed friends living outside Philadelphia who were just as jubilant as I with the Christie victory......even though they live in PA they said Christie's big win gave them hope too for a better future.
Lisa -
Mail this one in!!! Corzine is done!!
Corzine is done!!
F Pfarr----alleluia! Last night the people of New Jersey restored my faith in my fellow man.
