Loss And Furor Take Toll On Obama, Poll Finds

advertisement

WASHINGTON — Senator Barack Obama's aura of inevitability in the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination has diminished after his loss in the Pennsylvania primary and amid the furor over his former pastor, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The survey suggests a very competitive race this November regardless of whom the Democrats nominate. In a head-to-head race between Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain, both candidates are backed by 45 percent of the registered voters. In a race between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. McCain, 48 percent back Mrs. Clinton and 43 percent support Mr. McCain.

No, but's thanks anyway....

"De" Vine...If you think I can't spell "DIVINE"....think again.
I am well aware of the correct spelling of Dante's book.

De is one of the most common prepositions in Spanish. Although it usually is translated as "of," and sometimes as "from," its use is far more versatile than the translation might suggest. In fact, in certain contexts, de can be translated not only as "of" or "from," but as "with," "by," or "in," among other words

We can all get smarter here. And maybe refine our sense of humour as well!

That this is the biased NYT, it says a load about where Obama currently stands. Now, of a sudden, Obama supporters are crying foul wherever you look while undertaking illegal robocalls attempting to keep the woman vote down and challenging a 527 supporting Hillary Clinton. Couple this with lawsuits filed by the RNC, DNC's partnership with Obama, and many other factors and you have a more potent combination against the Dems than ever seen before.

Amazing. Clinton wins by 10% in PA, and she's MORE disliked by men and others ... Obama is tarnished, and he continues to be the nominee of choice. Don't get that one. I noted that the "undecideds" in Indiana and North Carolina are larger in numbers, and a new poll showed the gap narrowing in North Carolina. I believe that there are now suspect numbers in anything saying Obama will win most Democrat votes in the next four primaries coming up. I don't believe, for instance, that voters in IN, WVA, KY and North Dakota really will buy Obama's tripe any longer. Yesterday, for the first time, I heard John King state, that by Gosh, if Obama really told Rev. Wright on the day he announced his candidacy, that he [Obama] felt it necessary to put some distance between he and Wright, because some of Wright's rhetoric was "pretty tough," then perhaps Obama was just as calculating a politician as ... oooooops! Senator Clinton??? And what are the chain of events there in that decision? Could it be that Rev. Wright was feeding back to Obama the very words Obama used on him ... that politicians sometimes have to say things that they need to say v. what they want(ed) to say ... namely, "he says the things he says because he's a politician, and I say the things I need to say, because I'm a pastor." Maybe Rev. Wright had already felt thrown under the bus more than enough!!! Maybe he HAD warned Obama ... I'm not going to allow a life time's work to be trashed when I KNOW what you told me the day you announced! Obama, in case folks haven't noticed, takes a visible "sag" in his demeanor and bounce, when things like this happen. He doesn't do well with criticism; he doesn't do well losing; he doesn't do well taking hard attacks on his campaign, as with the Rev. Wright controversy, and the veracity of the anger and outrage experessed about his "spiritual mentor." On NEWSMAX today, there's an article which purports Rev. Wright wasn't as maligned an individual in his youth as he has led Obama to believe. Won't it be something if the poor attacked Rev. actually made up a fair amount of his biography, in order to qualify as a "Black Liberation Theologist." Rev. Wright undoubtedly has more to say on this ... and surely, someone will score an exclusive. After all, he has that $10M home to care for now. If there are more nasties which emerge about Rev. Wright, his beliefs, comments, assumptions, lies, truths ... Obama will continue to be asked questions ... each time, driving another nail in his once invincible coffin. He'll not get my vote. He is a phony, and is just as cold and calculating as he accuses Senator Clinton of being. The Dems will lose I'd urge Clinton supporters to pledge some of their rebate checks to her campaign fund. And, to stay on top of new revelations which emerge about the Rev. Wright-Obama connection. My guess is, if Clinton has moved up in the North Carolina polls, she could be dead even with Obama next week. If she beats Obama, or ties him in both, that's an improvement for her. Remember now, how this has consistently gone: She's ahead in PA. She ONLY wins by 10% points, instead of the 20% or more that she once held the lead. If she ties him in NC, or IN, or both, then she'll have somehow lost both elections ... the "spread," you know ... will continue to make him the algebraic winner. I would urge Clinton supporters or even those who are on the fence, to look at her ability to lead and lead from the start, vote for her, and hopefully, take her solidly into the winner's column in IN, NC, and soon ... WVA, KY, and ND. If she could win all five of those, my guess would be, she'll be ahead in total votes cast, and coming even with the delegate race, too. If the Superdelegates want to vote against the will of the people, let them. It will be the ruin of the best chance to win the congress and white house in many years. If the Dem superdelegates are that stupid, let them go at it.

4.0 - This is key ----obama's favorables ain't what they used to be. Because there is little perceived difference between the 2 dem frontrunners this dem nomination process as we know has largely been a battle of the favorability ratings......obama's are clearly slipping. It's amazing how acting all petulant can hurt the perception that one is charismatic and messianic. Zennhead, thanks for coming by!

gpnavonod - 4.4 - agreed. That said I will not underestimate the damage that the DNC smear machine will inflict on John Mccain so I will never be overly confident of anything transpiring in this election----nevertheless the dems have proven time and time again that they do not know how to choose their best candidate for November. The RNC will have Obama defined as a Mike Dukakis candidate with NO experience come November.

While you think about that, think about this. No matter which one is the candidate, Hillary or Obama, let's consider what conclusions will be drawn if the dems lose this election.

Given that this should be the most winnable election the democrats have gone into in the last 60 years or so, if the democratic candidate loses it will be taken as a mandate that a woman or a black man can not ever be a viable candidate for president.

If the dems lose, how long do you think it will be before a woman or a black man gets another real shot at the presidency?

Wheel - NONE of that is my problem.....blame the DNC if that's what happens. I do not vote for ANYONE on the basis that it would be cool to have a black guy or a woman as President. To think that voters (beyond dem primary voters) are gonna vote that way is ludicrous.

      We agree on that.
I was thinking it would be "risky business" running a woman..even though I like Hillary...When suddenly Barack pops out of the same gate.. "Out of the Blue".. .Poor Edwards was like a runt in a "Liberals Love Nest".

The Cuckoos nest inmates [ultra far left ward] have stolen the keys and are stumbling though the halls and banging their heads off the walls.

Self thinks the sedatives will arrive in November.
And I say to him: "Well, Self,... too bad.."
"They were headed for the Rose garden... and will end up as pavement in the parking lot". LoL [I'm just "a touch" Loony Liberal Dem....Self is more Conservative... and usually wins our arguments]

Senator Barack Obama's aura of inevitability...

This is really bad, self-aggrandizing "reporting" by the New York Times. I'm not sure Obama ever had an "aura of inevitability;" or Hillary, for that matter. I think the media made this @!$%# up about the candidates having "an aura of inevitability," whatever that means. Both candidates campaigned and worked hard throughout and continue to.

The Times can be accurate and say his lead appears to be diminishing, but that wouldn't be fun.
